Edinburgh & the Lothians

The much-photographed Victoria Street in Edinburgh’s Old Town. It’s one of the newer streets, built around 1830

Because this area takes in quiet rural farmlands, fishing and port communities, coal and shale mining, and of course a capital city, the range of occupations for our ancestors was huge here. Tracing family history here is never dull !

Some of the occupations of individuals that I’ve researched include

tailor

carver & gilder

printer & compositor

bookbinder

coal miner

customs officer

brewer

golf ball maker
