Castleton parish is more commonly known as Liddesdale. Historically it is strongly associated with the notorious Border Reivers who were dominant here in the 16th century. Those searching for their ancestors here may well be looking for some of the famous reiver names. Names like Armstrong, Elliot, Crozier, Nixon and Henderson still feature strongly in later records from this parish.
I’ve attempted to bring together some new family history resources which should be of interest to everyone with Liddesdale ancestry. These are designed to complement the information that can be got from the conventional genealogical resources that you might use such as Old Parish Registers, Censuses and Monumental Inscriptions. Hopefully, they may help you in your search. Some of these resources are available free of charge with a small Paypal charge for others.
Find here a list of farms/locations in Castleton parish as listed in the Buccleuch Estate Records of 1814-15.
Buccleuch Farm Rentals 1814-15 for some other Roxburghshire areas have now (March 2024) been added to the collection.
