I wrote an article about my Stewart/Stuart ancestors in Kelso for the October 2011 issue of the Borders Family History magazine. My 3 x great-grandfather Richard Stewart, a skinner to trade but descended from a long line of butchers, became Keeper of the Dispensary, and his wife Jean (Grahamslaw) and unmarried daughter Graham Stewart took it in turns to be "housekeeper" there. Graham finished up as "matron", although I'm not aware that she had any medical or nursing training. Richard Stewart died at the Dispensary in 1877.
