If you want to find out the names of the 15 Sturgeons from 1585 that I mentioned in the article then go to rps.ac.uk and search 'Sturgeon' in the Search Box (use Translation option). Then select the reference from 1585. I believe all of these people fought for Lord Maxwell in his raid on Stirling Castle. Most were tenants on his Dumfriesshire lands.

So far I’ve traced back to Robert sturgeon born 1610, but I can’t find much past that.
Robert sturgeon born 1610
Before him was Samuel sturgeon born 1655 and he was married to Margaret Bell born 1651. I hope anyone that knows anymore about them could see this.

I’m guessing that you don’t know the exact location of where he and his family lived in Roxburghshire. Quite a lot of Roxburghshire had Buccleuch estates! And its likely that a shepherd would not be named on the rentals for the estates. However there is still quite a lot that you can do to work out exactly where he came from. He has a distinctive name which would not have been that common (although Davidson is a well known Border name). He may well have named his children according to the traditional Scottish naming system which may give clues about his own parents too. My great-great-grandfather was Richard Davidson (Apr 23 1794-1883). He was a shepherd on an estate of the Duke of Buccleuch in Roxboroughshire, leaving for Canada in 1832.

I am planning a trip to the area — can anyone narrow this down and advise how to get more background?
