I'm guessing that you don't know the exact location of where he and his family lived in Roxburghshire. Quite a lot of Roxburghshire had Buccleuch estates! And its likely that a shepherd would not be named on the rentals for the estates. However there is still quite a lot that you can do to work out exactly where he came from. He has a distinctive name which would not have been that common (although Davidson is a well known Border name). He may well have named his children according to the traditional Scottish naming system which may give clues about his own parents too. I've messaged you separately as I'm sure that I can help you further. .

My great-great-grandfather was Richard Davidson (Apr 23 1794-1883). He was a shepherd on an estate of the Duke of Buccleuch in Roxboroughshire, leaving for Canada in 1832.

I am planning a trip to the area -- can anyone narrow this down and advise how to get more background?

Hello, does anyone have any information at all on the 4 semi attached cottages in the Broadmeadows Bowhill estate land ( which became the first Scottish Youth Hostel) please. I would like to know more about the cottages before it was bought by the SYHA in 1931. Any information would be fantastic , thank you!

That's good. I don't know if the farm name relates to this but a Teind was an annual payment made by landowners which went towards funding the parish church and the minister's stipend. Roughly equivalent to the English 'tithe'.

I’ve now found the farm on your Teviotdalehead Rentals list but what is a “teind”?

Thankyou Andrew. I looked for this in your pay per view section but couldn’t find the relevant estate.

Could you point me in the right direction please just in case he was the farmer’s son?

Yes - Teindside is in Hawick parish. Its on the A7 just north of Colterscleuch which was asked about earlier. There were some cottages there and I suspect that is where David Murray lived. Unfortunately the Buccleuch rental records for that area just have information about Teindside farm and not the cottages which would have been sub-let.

Was Teindside on a Buccleuch Estate?
