Hello, does anyone have any information at all on the 4 semi attached cottages in the Broadmeadows Bowhill estate land ( which became the first Scottish Youth Hostel) please. I would like to know more about the cottages before it was bought by the SYHA in 1931. Any information would be fantastic , thank you!

In reply to Yvonne Hardwick. That's good. I don't know if the farm name relates to this but a Teind was an annual payment made by landowners which went towards funding the parish church and the minister's stipend. Roughly equivalent to the English 'tithe'.

In reply to Yvonne Hardwick. Yes - Teindside is in Hawick parish. Its on the A7 just north of Colterscleuch which was asked about earlier. There were some cottages there and I suspect that is where David Murray lived. Unfortunately the Buccleuch rental records for that area just have information about Teindside farm and not the cottages which would have been sub-let.

I have an Attestation record for a David Murray of Teindside from around the end of the 1700s.

Was Teindside on a Buccleuch Estate?

Where was the Coltherdscleugh farm located?
I am looking for a location for the birth of a James Renwick 1751 or 1756.

Our Laidlaw ancestors were shepherds continuously for over 300 years on “Syart”., located at the head of the Megget Dam. The last one retiring c1957. Family lore relates the farm got its name at the time Mary Queen of Scots was out riding in a party with the Duke of Buccleuch when she exclaimed “See the Hart”.
Several years ago I was fortunate enough to visit the farm, and speak with the current shepherd.
