Canonbie Militia List – 1802

Following on from my last post regarding the militia lists for Roxburghshire in 1802,  I have found the following information which was transcribed by R.A.Shannon and made available in the Covenant and Hearth series Vol VIII in 1973 available in the Ewart Library in Dumfries.

The original data was taken from the Lieutenancy minutes for the sub-division of Eskdale under the terms of the Militia act 1797. This originally required that a record was made of eligible men in the parish from age 19-23, although by 1802 this had been extended upwards to age 45.

This can be considered as a census substitute for Canonbie parish in Dumfriesshire with all men aged 19-45 in Canonbie parish in 1802.  The third person on this list is my own great great great great grandfather who would have been 39 or 40 at the time.

11 thoughts to “Canonbie Militia List – 1802”

  1. Greetings!
The 3rd person down, your ancestor Wm Armstrong, could be related to my husbands ancestor Andrew Armstrong who was from the same area. He lived from 1763-abt.1831 I have been unable to find a death record for him. His wife was Elizabeth Lithgow 1775-abt 1855. I did find her living in the garden of glenzir area in the 1851 census record with her children. I found your web site while researching Scotland.

  2. Kathryn – the 3rd person down on the list is Andrew Armstrong not William, and as I mention in the post, he is my direct ancestor. I guess that means that I’m related to your husband !

  3. Andrew Armstrong died at Garden of Glenzier 28th August 1831 age 68
Elizabeth Lithgow died there 11th March 1859 age 83
This information from memorial inscriptions in Canonbie Kirkyard.
I have a lot more information on this particular family.

  4. Nice to see the Liddesdale and Middle Marches (both sides) Reiver names well represented, but no Crosiers or Nicksouns – did they change to Nicol to protect the guilty?

  5. Hello from Aus, During searches this page got my attention. Every time I have looked at my Armstrong connection, I always seem to put it in the too hard basket. My great grandmother was Jeannie Armstrong RAE, daughter of John Armstrong RAE born abt 1817 Roxburghshire, (he married Betsy Welsh in 1845 at Hawick, came to Australia 1853), his parents were Robert RAE, a weaver born abt 1776 & Christian ARMSTRONG, (father Henry?). I have found a copy of John’s baptism at Hawick in 1817, but trying to find who Christine, his mother, belongs to has been a bit of a challenge. I have found someone else has her connected to Henry ARMSTRONG and Helen ELLIOT from Canonbie ?? Henry’s father being Andrew ARMSTRONG and Ann IRVINE. With these surnames being on your 1802 list it got my attention. Do any of the people I have mentioned have any connection to your Andrew ?? REGARDS Lois

  6. Hi Lois. In the OPRs I can only see two Christian Armstrongs born in Canonbie around the right time neither of which have a father called Henry. No 1 was born in 1776 to James Armstrong and Janet Armstrong, and no 2 was born in 1787 to James Armstrong and Isabel Elliot. What is the evidence for the father named Henry ?

  7. Hi
I m related to Jasin Calvert of Orchard..not sure how though as it’s not a name that I have come across before..my Calverts all lived at Orchard in Canonbie and there doesn’t seem to be any other records…that I can find…of him
Do you know anything more about him and what happened to him
    Many thanks
    Karen

    1. Hi Karen,

There were Calverts at Orchard farm since the 17th century I believe. But the name Jasin (or even Jason) was almost unheard of at that time in Scotland which makes me wonder how this name came about. As you say, the name does not appear in any other sources for Canonbie of which I’m aware. I would speculate that Jasin was born with another more ordinary name but had, for some reason, become known by this name. I’ll email you privately with some further thoughts soon.

  8. The Adam SCOTT (Farmer from Shillingmoss/ Shielingmoss in Canonbie) is my 4 x great grandfather. An interesting find, Thank you.
